India mobile top-ups vs prepaid plans: what are you buying?
An INR amount does not tell you whether a recharge adds talktime, extends validity or supplies data. Jio and Airtel organise these benefits differently, so first ask what the recipient needs and then match the exact operator product.
Start with the benefit, not the rupee amount

Jio: Top-up is a separate talktime category
Jio lists Top-up separately and describes those entries as providing talktime. MyJio separately shows the active plan, plan validity and data balance, including current and upcoming plans. If the recipient says “recharge my Jio,” ask whether they need talktime or a specific plan or data benefit before choosing.
The Jio listing in this shop shows INR face values, but its generic top-up label does not establish a current Jio plan, allowance or validity period. Use MyJio to identify the need.
Airtel: choose among validity, talktime and data
Airtel’s India recharge flow distinguishes recharges by purpose: validity, talktime or data. The Airtel Thanks app shows the active plan, validity and data balance. Select the required benefit there rather than treating every Airtel recharge as interchangeable credit.

A practical decision before you buy
- Confirm Jio or Airtel is the exact Indian operator.
- Ask whether the need is talktime, service validity or data.

- Choose only a product whose label and current details match that benefit.
- Treat the INR amount as the product face value, never as proof of gigabytes or days.

Does a larger INR value mean more data?
